Hollow Homes for Wildlife
Building Community Awareness of Nest boxes and Artificial Hollows
Landcare on the North Coast took a lead role in the provision of artificial nest boxes to support hollow-dependant wildlife after the 2019-20 bushfires. In 2022, a Landcare Led project funded by the Australian Governments Bushfire Recovery Program, a central database was established with over 1600 nest box monitoring records entered. Expert ecologists were engaged to interpret the success of the nest box installation and provide guidance on how this common wildlife conservation activity could be improved. In August 2023 NCRLN partnered with Charles Sturt University (CSU) to host an inaugural Nest Box & Artificial Hollows Symposium at the Port Macquarie campus to present the data.
Building on these outcomes, the 2023 Hollow Homes for Wildlife Project Funded by WIRES, promotes the installation of nest boxes for wildlife, communicating both the ecological outcomes of nest box and artificial hollows and the social benefits including what finding occupation does to people’s hearts and commitments to conservation. The project will engage with communities, promoting best-practice artificial hollow habitat installation and developing a short film that will be used to increase awareness and appreciation.
